Cow Addition
An addition.
So yesterday I went for a lie down in the meadow near me whilst Hazel and the mutts had a walk. I was ill. Treacle headed. Fuzzy. Exhausted.
I watched lights dance in my eyes as I stared into the sky as I laid on my back, my new, must wear whilst out, polarised sunglasses turning the sky to grey. The lights chasing around my eyes were pretty frenetic shooting this way and that. I slowly pondered if this was a visual aura of a migraine. Or just high blood pressure. I also slowly pondered how shit I felt. Why I kept collapsing.
And in between I closed my eyes. And time skipped past in the way it does for me.
Nothing but a faint breeze. And the silence of the meadow. Quiet. Peace. Calm.
Sometime later a thoroughly wet Poppy ran up to me and greeted me with a sloppy face lick. I didn't move. Or open my eyes. But I did say hello. And patted her. You're wet I said rather stupidly. Have you been swimming ?
A few minutes later the slower Athena gave me the same treatment.
Followed by Hazel.
You know there are cows right there she said.
What ?
There are cows. Almost on top of you.
I shifted my head for the first time in half an hour. Sure enough. Two cows. 5 yards from me. Both staring at all of us. Both trying to get a sniff of me lying on the floor.
Oh. They're curious about me I said.
I've had encounters with cows in the meadow many a time through the years. Sometimes they are incurious. Sometimes they will follow you around. And the youngsters are often full of curiousity. Particularly if you're doing something odd. So. It wasn't a huge surprise that me lying in a meadow had attracted the cows, although, to be fair, when I laid down, they were nowhere to be seen.
Poppy had a sniff, snoot to snoot and thought better of it and backed off. Gave them a bark when the cows came up and sniffed her butt. No thank you. Goodbye. Big scary moos. Go away !
The momma cows were nearby but utterly unphased.
The babies were still very curious despite the few warning barks.
They came right up to Hazel who cooed and chatted at them.
Athena, as is her wont, decided to start eating cow poop. Don't ask me. She loves them. You have to chase her off them. Which Hazel did. And then poopy mouthed I suggested they do another lap and get a drink from the river to wash out the poop. And. Unstated. Leave me alone.
Hazel and the dogs left.
Leaving just me and the cows.
Who slowly, slowly approached me. Fascinated.
It crossed my mind that I could be killed here, trampled to death by cows. Getting stomped by huge moos is going to give you a bad time.
But. I was unphased. Didn't care. If I die, I die. What does it matter.
I watched the swifts circling high above me in the sky. And closed my eyes again to the sounds of cows munching on grass, and the babies sniffing me. Peace. Quiet.
Time shifted again.
